"Aicha" Watercolor Story
As my final project at school in Florence, Italy, I wanted to focus on the refugee crisis in Europe – an event often obscured to me by the charm of daily Florentine life. With "Aicha," I imagine a young Syrian refugee arriving in Florence. She explores the beauty of the historic city with the awe of a child, experiencing the hope of a new beginning. But the sadness of living without a home and far from family colors her day. I intended the style of these illustrations to convey the dream-like quality and disconnection that occurs when a person's life is uprooted and transplanted to a new place.
